New Leaf Psychotherapy

In every change, in every falling leaf, there is
some pain, some beauty. And that’s the way
new leaves grow.

~ Amit Ray

Welcome

I’m excited you’re looking into therapy, which is a service that people from all walks of life enjoy and find beneficial. I hope you’ll enjoy participating in therapy as much as others have and as much as I do.

Your goal for therapy might be to learn new skills, make important changes in your life, or learn new things about yourself. No matter what you’re currently facing, or how long you’ve had these challenges, you can always turn over a new leaf in your life and give yourself a fresh start.

If you’ve decided to pursue therapy, you might be asking yourself, “But where to I begin?”

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with where to start – so much has happened, and there are so many things you’d like to change or work through.

As the saying goes…

Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can. As a Psychotherapist

I have a PhD in clinical psychology and specialize in brief, solution-focused treatment of emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal difficulties among adults. My key areas of expertise include the assessment and treatment of depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, and substance abuse.

I also specialize in helping others master skills for mindfulness (being in the moment), coping with stress and changes, resolving conflict, and finding more meaning and joy in life. Modalities of treatment include individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, and teletherapy. I also teach several 6-week courses.

My treatment approaches include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-informed therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). For much more about my specialties, see “My Specialties” below.

I create an environment conducive to making and maintaining positive changes more quickly than might otherwise be expected in therapy.

Toward that end, my style is active and directive, with significant time and energy devoted to learning new skills that can be practiced outside of therapy. Reasoning things out with someone else is a key benefit of psychotherapy, so I also reserve time for reflection and gaining perspective, too.

In addition to my private practice work, I carve out 30% of my time to be an active international research scientist. I am an expert consultant to Columbia University, an Ivy league school in New York City. and a co-author of the prestigious Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-5 (SCID-5), which is known worldwide as the field’s gold standard for psychiatric assessments.

As a scientist-practitioner, I am dedicated to providing evidence-based treatment and consultation services. I offer a warm, supportive, compassionate, and nurturing environment in therapy while encouraging personal responsibility in patients.

I deeply respect the courage it takes to change and am genuinely concerned about the people I serve.

Great care is taken for developing and maintaining a strong therapeutic relationship, which is the #1 predictor of positive treatment outcomes.

I approach therapy with energy and enthusiasm. This work is my passion – it feeds my soul.

The Rest of Your Story Is Still Unwritten

Back in the 16th century, pages in books were referred to as leaves. Turning over a new leaf meant that one was turning to a blank page. This idiom is used to signify a major change in behavior, or a new stage in life.

My philosophy at New Leaf Psychotherapy is that you can create a new life for yourself. With a new page, you can begin writing the rest of your story. We cannot change what happened in the past, but we can change ourselves and what the future holds. How would you like your story to continue?

Cultivating a New Beginning

Learning how to turn over a new leaf is about discovering yourself and the life you are meant to live.

What brings people into therapy at New Leaf to start anew? I often hear people in our office say things like:

I can’t stop worrying. My mind just won’t shut off. I even have panic attacks sometimes. I feel like I’m going crazy.

I’m utterly exhausted, but yet I can’t sleep at night. I cry at the littlest things. Nothing sounds good anymore. I don’t remember the last time I felt good.

Something horrible happened. Why didn’t I do anything? I can’t relax. I just want to move on.

I’m damaged, broken. No one will ever want to be with me. Even my own parents didn’t love me.

It’s always going to be this way. I’m ready to give up. I just want the pain to end.

It is not uncommon for people to feel confused, frustrated, and hopeless about their ability to overcome their difficulties but…

Giving up is not an option. You are a warrior. Look at everything you have overcome.

I believe in you. Let’s get this.
